5 LGBT things you need to know today, March 28

by Georgia Voice March 28, 2017 | 7:53 amMarch 29, 2017 | 9:13 am

1. Research done by the Associated Press shows that despite Republican officials’ claims to the contrary, North Carolina’s “bathroom bill” will cost the state nearly $4 billion in lost revenue over the next 12 years.

2. Karen Ocamb, a lesbian, was fired from the Frontiers publication last year despite decades of experience as a journalist. Now a senior writer with the Los Angeles Blade, Ocamb sued Frontiers on the basis of age discrimination.

3. In other LGBT journalism-related news, the Associated Press added the singular pronoun version of “they” to its stylebook, and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists teamed up with the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association to create a Spanish stylebook with guidelines about reporting on the LGBT community.

4. The home-sharing website Airbnb and the national SAGE (Service and Advocacy for GLBT Elders) group have a new way to engage senior LGBT individuals: connecting folks from around the country with Airbnb hosts in New York City for Pride.

5. VIDEO OF THE DAY: The documentary “This is Who I Am: Stories of LGBTQ Survival from Jamaica” — called the most homophobic place on Earth — premiered at the SXSW festival earlier this month. It’s part of TV channel Logo’s Global Ally campaign, which seeks to be a “megaphone” for individuals whose voices may not be heard because of their country’s views on equality.
