Servers only need to get one alcohol pouring permit to work at multiple restaurants in Sandy Springs after the city council amended its alcoholic beverages ordinance.
City Attorney Dan Lee said that in 2007 when the city’s ordinance was enacted it was rare for a server to work at a second restaurant. The law required a server to obtain an individual pouring permit and take alcohol awareness training for each restaurant or bar that employed them.
“I made the mistake of going to one of our local establishments on the very day that one of their servers had to go get three or four different licenses. And they were not happy,” Mayor Rusty Paul said.
He said the owner of that restaurant came over and they discussed how servers are working part-time at multiple establishments.
The amended ordinance allows a server to use one alcohol pouring permit for every job worked in the city.
Councilmember Melody Kelley said she wanted the city to proactively address similar barriers to employment as they come up in the future.
Councilmember Andy Bauman agreed with her. He suggested that the city might work with the chamber of commerce or a business roundtable where these kinds of regulations could be reviewed.
