Brookhaven City Council approved spending to address a new issue caused by the recent reconstruction of North Fork Peachtree Creek bridge at North Druid Hills Road.
Trail plans for Phase II of the Peachtree Creek Greenway became misaligned during the bridge project, which was the first step in a major traffic improvement plan at the I-85 and North Druid Hills Road interchange.
Engineering firm Heath and Lineback previously provided alignment for the trail segment but the Georgia Department of Transportations construction team did not adhere to the initial plans, according to the city.
The council approved a supplemental agreement on July 26 with Heath and Lineback for $79,857 to redesign approximately 450 linear feet of the trail and boardwalk in Phase II. Brookhaven is seeking additional funding from the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC).
Phase II of the Peachtree Creek Greenway is estimated to cost $20 million, and is primarily being funded by federal dollars via the ARC. Federal funding requires an agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation, adding up to five years to the execution.
Phase II is a more complicated and costly project that fits well into the federal funding model, projected to take about eight years from the award of federal funds to build out, said Brookhaven Communications Director Burke Brennan.
In other news, a planned reflooring project is moving forward at the Lynwood Recreation Center.
The council voted to install epoxy floors for $73,786, replacing the existing floors throughout the building. Facility Services Director Greg Klima said the renovation has been stretched out “a lot longer than we thought” due to foundational issues in the facility.
Because the bathroom will be closed during the project, public use of the gym will be unavailable for a week.
In 2022, Lynwood Park renovations included the addition of a splash pad, swimming pool, pool house, multi-purpose field, and parking lot at the Mendell Circle entrance.
The next Brookhaven City Council meeting is Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m.
