Verisk-ISO gave a Class 1 rating to the Sandy Springs Fire Department, an evaluation that could lower or slow the increase of insurance premiums for property owners.

Fire Chief Keith Sanders advised property owners to check with their insurance provider to find out if the rating affects their insurance premiums. It will take about 90 days for Veris-ISO to notify all the insurance carriers, he said.

“It will have a dramatic impact on the commercial insurance carriers or commercial properties within the community,” he said.

Only 1 percent of the 36,000 fire departments across the nation attain this rating, said Verisk Vice President Mike Morris during the Aug. 20 Sandy Springs City Council meeting.

He said the company evaluated the city’s public protection ISO rating in September 2023. Insurance companies use the rating to determine what if any discounts they will apply to residential and commercial properties.

Verisk evaluated the fire department and its members, the 911 center, and the water and utility departments that serve the city.

“I just want to take a moment to congratulate the hard work that Sandy Springs Fire Department did,” Morris said.
