2. ‘A Complete Unknown’: the myth, the man, the legend

WEEKLY FILM REVIEW | BY SAMMIE PURCELL

? In 2007, โ€œWalk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story,โ€ hit theaters and ruined the musical biopic forever. And no film felt the presence of โ€œWalk Hardโ€ more than James Mangoldโ€™s Johnny Cash biopic โ€œWalk the Line.โ€

โ€œA Complete Unknown,โ€ Mangoldโ€™s newest foray into the music biopic, is not as good as โ€œWalk the Line,โ€ and that makes โ€œWalk Hardโ€ a little more difficult to banish from your mind as you watch. The film, which tells the story of Bob Dylan, changes up the structure slightly โ€“ it doesnโ€™t follow his entire life, and instead of some sort of addiction threatening to ruin his career, it’s his interest in rock ‘n’ roll.

But those same old tropes โ€“ nagging girlfriend, tortured genius who no one understands, etc. โ€“ still pop up throughout. Despite all that, โ€œA Complete Unknownโ€ is perfectly enjoyable, although it sometimes feels more like a glorified concert than a movie โ€“ something Mangold, who is particularly wonderful at staging a performance for the screen โ€“ can sort of get away with. But the biggest problem โ€œA Complete Unknownโ€ runs into time and time again is that it canโ€™t get past the legendary status of its central figure.
