
Former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away Sunday at the age of 100, will lie in state at The Carter Center in Atlanta at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. before burial in Plains, GA.
President Joe Biden announced that the official state funeral for Carter will be held at Washington National Cathedral on Jan. 9, which has also been declared a national day of mourning. Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy, according to a report from CNN.
The Carter Center announced via social media that Carter will lie in state in the U.S. Capitol rotunda for the public to pay its respects to the late president.

Here is the official schedule for the funeral services:
Jan. 4
The state funeral begins on Saturday morning with the arrival of the Carter Family at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Plains, after which his motorcade will travel through Plains. There will be a brief stop at his boyhood home for a salute by the National Park Service. His remains will then travel to Atlanta, stopping at the State Capitol at 3 p.m. for a moment of silence led by Gov. Brian Kemp. Carter’s remains will then taken The Carter Center for an arrival ceremony at 3:45 p.m. and service at 4 p.m. Following the service, he will lie in repose for mourners to come and pay their
respects from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Jan. 7
A final ceremony will be held at The Carter Center at 9:30 a.m. before Carter’s remains are flow to Washington, D.C. aboard Special Air Mission 39, which will first arrive at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. Carter’s remains will be taken to the U.S. Navy Memorial and placed upon a horse drawn caisson for a funeral procession to the U.S. Capitol at 2 p.m. Military body bearers will carry Carter into the Rotunda where members of Congress will pay their respects during a service at 3 p.m. Carter will then lie in state until Monday, Jan. 8.
Jan. 9
The state funeral will occur at the Washington National Cathedral on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. Then Carter will then be transported back to Plains for a private internment at the family residence that evening. The public is invited to line the motorcade route as Carter and his family travel through his beloved hometown of Plains to the late president’s final resting place. The U.S. Navy will conduct a missing man formation flyover in honor of former President Carter’s naval service and time as commander-in-chief shortly after the motorcade’s arrival at the residence.
