More than 23,000 people paid their respects to President Jimmy Carter while he lay in repose at The Carter Center from Saturday night to early Tuesday morning.

A departure ceremony was held at The Carter Center this morning before the hearse carried Carter’s body to Dobbins Air Reserve Base to be transported to Washington, D.C.

However, winter weather in the nation’s capital has delayed the state funeral schedule. All of today’s events in Washington have been pushed back 90 minutes.

Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Leader John Thune will give brief eulogies at 4:30 p.m. in the Capitol rotunda, where Carter will lie in state from 7 p.m. until midnight for mourners to pay their respect.

The public viewing will resume Jan. 8 at 7 a.m. and continue until Jan. 9 at 7 a.m. Carter’s funeral will be held at Washington National Cathedral on Thursday, which has been declared a national day of mourning by President Joe Biden.
