The family of the Dunwoody High School student who died May 6 after an alleged fentanyl overdose has started a GoFundMe page, which has already raised more than $8,000 for funeral expenses.
The page – organized by Paola Covarrubias and created Monday evening – has collected 163 donations totaling $8,091 for the student, who was identified only as “Mia.”
“We unfortunately lost our sister Mia to the epidemic of fentanyl-laced drugs bought from someone at her school,” Covarrubias said. “Mia was a very loving and caring person who had a bright future ahead of her with plans of enlisting in the military to help out at home. It brings us great pain to family and friends & she will be greatly missed. “
The money, the page said, will be used to give the 15-year-old “a proper send off and funeral that will be announced at a later time.”
A post on Mia’s Instagram page said a memorial will be held May 8 at 4 p.m. at Brook Run Park to honor the 10th grade student.
“Bring blue balloons and stories to honor her life that was taken too soon,” the post said.
The student died after what school officials identified only as a “medical emergency,” yesterday afternoon while in a classroom.
The school was on partial lock down during the afternoon as police and drug-sniffing dogs scoured the building.
A letter sent to parents by DHS Principal Tom Bass after the incident said it “occurred as many students were testing.”
“After the incident, the school was put on lock down to limit movement within the building,” Bass said. “We will not disclose additional information surrounding this student’s death out of respect for the family’s privacy.”
Bass, in his letter, said grief counselors and other personnel will be on hand today for any students needing their services.
Dunwoody Public Information Officer Michael Cheek said the DeKalb School Police are heading up the investigation, with Dunwoody assisting.
