Local and state leaders, as well as organizations, are remembering former President Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday at age 100.

The Carter Center in Atlanta is encouraging those wishing to pay tribute to Carter to sign the online condolences book and get ceremony updates at JimmyCarterTribute.org.

U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff released the following statement:

“I extend my deepest condolences to Jack, Chip, Jeff, Amy, and the entire Carter family on their loss.

“A former Georgia State Senator, Governor of Georgia, and President of the United States, President Carter’s lifetime of work and dedication to public service changed the lives of many across our state, our country, and around the world.

“Among his lifetime of service and countless accomplishments, President Carter will be remembered for his commitment to democracy and human rights, his enduring faith, his philanthropic leadership, and his deep love of family.

“From Plains to across the State of Georgia, the United States, and around the world, millions will forever admire and appreciate all that President Carter did for the United States and for the global community.

“The State of Georgia and the United States are better places because of President Jimmy Carter.

“I join all Georgians and all Americans in mourning his loss. May Jimmy Carter’s memory be a blessing.”

A statement from Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger:

“President Carter dedicated his life to serving our great nation and the people of Georgia.

As a true servant-leader, he devoted his post-presidency to spreading the very best of American ideals across the globe. His commitment to peace, democracy, and human rights has left an indelible mark on the world.

Tricia and I mourn his passing and extend our deepest condolences to the Carter family. May President Carter be at peace, reunited with his true love Rosalynn in their eternal rest.”

A statement from Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison:

“It is with great sadness, a heavy heart, and fond memories that we mourn the loss of President Jimmy Carter — a man who exemplified what it means to serve on behalf of the American people. President Carter led by example, urging Americans to act with kindness, follow their moral compass, and speak truth to power.

“As governor, he was a trailblazer on environmental policy and stood up for civil rights and desegregation in Georgia. Throughout his presidency, he was guided by his faith, his selfless commitment to others, and his empathy. President Carter aspired to build a government grounded in competence and compassion and leave behind a country where dreams are achievable, and hope is more than an aspiration.

“President Carter’s legacy extends beyond the White House and into his tremendous charity and humanitarian work. A champion for democracy and human rights, he improved the lives of countless people through his decency, compassion, and devotion to his incredibly important work.

“We will continue to honor President Carter’s legacy by being kind to our neighbors, leading with love, and continuing our fight for the American people. His incredible life shines bright through his children and grandchildren, and during this difficult time, we offer President Carter’s family our deepest condolences. We are blessed to have been graced by his humanity, dignity, and respect.”

A statement from Mercer University President William D. Underwood. Carter was a Mercer University Life Trustee and more than two dozen of his books were published by Mercer University Press.

“President Carter, as with every endeavor he pursued, was an active, engaged trustee. “Until his health began to decline in 2019, he never missed a board meeting. He asked tough questions, offered keen insights, and took every opportunity to advance Mercer and its mission. He offered wise counsel to me and was a good friend. His death leaves a significant void in the Mercer family. With profound gratitude for the life he lived, we offer our prayers to the Carter family for peace and comfort in this time of loss.”

A statement from the Atlanta City Council:

“An embodiment of character and earnestness, President Carter’s life was marked by remarkable achievement, humanitarianism, and a passion for human rights. Inevitably, he will be remembered for his ascent from peanut farmer to president, but he also leaves behind a record of true accomplishment in domestic and international affairs. After leaving office, he continued advocating for democratic principles and dedicated himself to charitable causes, including founding the Carter Center in 1982, and building homes for Habitat for Humanity. He created incalculable memories for those in Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and across the world. We extend our deepest condolences to the Carter family and everyone mourning this significant loss.”
